Since the 1980s, Dr. Alex de Waal has been closely watching
events unfold in Sudan. His first encounter with the country was as an Oxford
Ph.D. student traveling to the Darfur region to study the famine of 1984-5.
After graduating, he went on to work for Human Rights Watch, the United
Nations, and the African Union, working to ameliorate the problems of war,
famine, and genocide in Africa.
In 2004 he once again decided to focus specifically on
Sudan. He has since participated in the African Union Mediation team for the
Darfur conflict. He visited Columbia
University last week to discuss the recently-published book “War in Darfur and
the Search for Peace”, a series of essays by leading Sudanese and international
specialists on Darfur, which he edited.
While on campus he spoke with SIPA student Jessica Wanke
about his take on the current situation in Darfur, government-rebel peace talks
set to take place in Tripoli at the end of this month, and a planned deployment
of a joint UN-AU peacekeeping force in Darfur near the end of 2007.
Dr. de Waal is currently a fellow at Harvard University's
Global Equity Initiative and is director of the Social Science Research
Council.
