First Suicide Bombing Strikes Pakistani Kashmir

Two soldiers were killed in the first suicide bombing in Pakistani Kashmir on Friday, marking a concerning expansion of Islamist militants’ campaign. The militants have carried out a series of bomb attacks across Pakistan in recent weeks in retaliation for a military offensive in the northwest. The blast in Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistani Kashmir, occurred near a military vehicle and also left three soldiers wounded. Analysts believe the attack is a sign of desperation as militants face increasing pressure from the offensive. This development comes as the U.S. Senate approved tripling aid to Pakistan to about $1.5 billion a year for five years, as part of a U.S. plan to fight extremism with economic development.
